A second chance for a first impression: Sensitivity to cumulative input statistics for lexically guided perceptual learning

Listeners use lexical knowledge to modify the mapping from acoustics speech sounds, but timecourse of experience that informs lexically guided perceptual learning is unknown. Some data suggest contingent on initial exposure atypical productions, while other reflects only most recent exposure. Here we seek reconcile these findings by assessing type and promote robust lexcially learning. In three experiments, listeners (n = 560) heard 20 critical productions interspersed among 200 trials during an phase then categorized items ashi–asi continuum in a test phase. Experiment 1, consisted ambiguous fricatives embedded either /s/- or /ʃ/-biasing contexts. Learning was observed; /s/-bias group showed more asi responses compared /ʃ/-bias group. 2, clear consistent context. Order bias were manipulated between-subjects, occurred regardless order which heard. 3, both differed between two groups, no difference groups observed at test. Moreover, results monotonic decrease across line with decreasing stable biasing contexts, replicated novel stimulus sets. contrast previous showing are for learning, current cumulative talker’s input over time.
